subtext
The underlying or implicit meaning of a literary work, speech, or dialogue, which is not directly stated.
Subtext is what characters are actually thinking or feeling beneath the polite surface of their spoken words. It relies on the reader's ability to read between the lines.

When not to use
Do not use subtext to describe overt, explicit statements. If a character says 'I hate you,' that is text, not subtext.
Fun facts
- The concept of subtext was heavily developed by the famous Russian theatre director Konstantin Stanislavski, who forced actors to write out their characters' inner thoughts to make their spoken lines more believable.
