extemporaneous
Spoken or done without preparation, but typically structured and delivered with the aid of brief notes (unlike purely impromptu speech).
In formal speech competition, extemporaneous refers to a speech that is thoroughly researched and outlined in advance but delivered without a memorized script or word-for-word reading.
Word relationships
- impromptu: Impromptu means completely unplanned and spur-of-the-moment, while extemporaneous implies preparation and structure, but no written script.
- unscripted: Unscripted simply means not written down, whereas extemporaneous specifically implies a structured, professional delivery.
- scripted: Scripted speeches are written out word-for-word and read directly by the speaker.
- memorized: Memorized speeches are committed to memory and recited exactly, leaving no room for spontaneous phrasing.
