The story behind the word. Originating from Latin 'aequus' (equal/level), equity was initially a legal system in England designed to deliver fair justice when rigid common law was overly harsh. In property law, equity came to signify the 'fair share' of a property that truly belongs to the owner, free of creditor claims.
