The temporary preloading and storing of media data in memory while streaming, ensuring smooth playback without pauses.
Often used frustratingly to describe playback pauses when data download speeds fall behind video playback speed.
The story behind the word. From the Old French 'buffe' (a shock-absorbing cushion). Railway cars used physical metal buffers to absorb impact between carriages. Computer engineers borrowed the term in the 1950s for memory spaces that cushioned speed differences between fast processors and slow input components.
