stranded
STRAN-did
/ˈstrændɪd/
Left helpless in a difficult or isolated position without means of departure or assistance.
Highlights isolation, helplessness, and lack of transportation or communication.
The story behind the word. In Germanic languages, a 'strand' was the shoreline or ocean beach. When a ocean vessel lost its rudder or got driven inland by storm waves, sailors described the ship as 'stranded'—literally cast ashore onto the sand, helpless and unable to float back out to deep water. Over centuries, the word widened from grounded ships to any human trapped without help.
