A 3D CAD model or physical structure consisting of multiple individual parts positioned and joined relative to each other.
An assembly is the unified whole, whereas the individual components that make it up are called 'parts' or 'sub-assemblies'.
The story behind the word. Derived from the Old French 'assemblee', from 'assembler' (to bring together), which traces back to the Latin 'assimulare' (to bring together or make like). Historically used for gatherings of people, it was adapted during the Industrial Revolution to describe the physical grouping of manufactured parts, and later, the digital grouping of CAD files.
