A material made from two or more constituent substances with significantly different physical or chemical properties.
Unlike an alloy or a chemical mixture, the individual components in a composite remain separate and distinct within the finished structure.
The story behind the word. Derived from the Latin prefix 'com-' (together) and 'ponere' (to place). For centuries, it referred to anything made of distinct parts, but the rise of material science in the 20th century turned 'composite' into a highly technical term for advanced engineered materials.
