MedicalGeneral

A substance that prevents or stops the growth of micro-organisms on living body tissue; preventing infection.

Antiseptics are formulated specifically for living skin and tissue, whereas disinfectants are meant for non-living inanimate surfaces.

The story behind the word. Coined in the mid-18th century by combining Greek 'anti' (against) with 'septikos' (causing decay, from 'sepein' to rot). Joseph Lister later revolutionized surgery by introducing antiseptic spraying methods using carbolic acid in the 1860s.

Word relationships

  • disinfectant: Disinfectants destroy pathogens on non-living surfaces, whereas antiseptics are safe for living tissue.
  • bactericide: A bactericide specifically kills bacteria, whereas antiseptics can target fungi, viruses, and bacteria.
  • septic: Infected, contaminated with disease-causing microorganisms, or decaying.
  • contaminant: A substance that introduces germs or pollution to a surface.

Commonly confused with

  • antibiotic: Antibiotics act internally or topically against specific bacterial strains, while antiseptics broadly kill various pathogens on skin surfaces.

  • antisepsis (noun): The practice or state of using antiseptic measures.
  • antiseptically (adverb): Done in a germ-preventing sterile manner.

When not to use

Do not use 'antiseptic' to describe harsh chemical floor cleaners like bleach, which are toxic on open skin.
