reflective
rih-FLEK-tiv
/rɪˈflɛktɪv/
Capable of bouncing back light, or thoughtful and contemplative.
In mobility contexts, describes gear coated with micro-prisms that bounce headlight beams straight back to drivers.
The story behind the word. Formed from Latin 're-' (back) and 'flectere' (to bend). Light 'bends back' toward its source upon hitting retroreflective surfaces. Inventor Percy Shaw created famous retroreflective road studs ('cat's eyes') in 1934 after seeing his car headlights bounce off a cat's eyes on a dark road.
Word relationships
- luminous: Luminous materials emit their own light in pitch darkness, whereas reflective gear merely bounces external light back.
- fluorescent: Fluorescent gear glows brightly in daylight UV, but requires reflective strips to shine in headlight beams at night.
- non-reflective: Does not return light toward its source.
- absorbent: Absorbs incoming light rays rather than reflecting them.
Commonly confused with
- refractive: Refractive refers to bending light rays through a medium like water, not bouncing them off a surface.
Word family
- reflect (verb): To throw back light, heat, or sound.
- reflectivity (noun): The property or degree of bouncing back light.

REFLECTIVE gear RE-FLECTS headlight light back to eyes! Bounces light back.
When not to use
Do not confuse with 'refractive' (bending light as it passes through a medium like glass or water).
Fun facts
- Microscopic glass beads inside reflective fabric act as thousands of tiny retroreflective prisms, bouncing headlamp light right back to the driver.
