A liquid medicinal or cosmetic preparation used to stimulate, invigorate, or style the hair and scalp.
In barbering, hair tonic is a light, watery liquid massaged into the scalp to stimulate circulation, break down grease, and provide a light, natural hold.
The story behind the word. Tonic comes from the Greek 'tonikos', from 'tonos' (tension or stretching). It originally referred to medicines that restored 'tone' or healthy tension to flaccid muscles and tissues, later applied to scalp-stimulating liquids.
