A heavy, warm, and earthy scent base, originally harvested from the scent gland of the male musk deer, now almost exclusively synthesized.
Musk is highly valued because it mimics the warm, clean smell of human skin and acts as an incredible fixative, extending the life of other notes.
The story behind the word. The word has an ancient and slightly scandalous origin. It comes from the Sanskrit word 'muska', which means 'testicle', describing the physical shape of the scent pod found on the male musk deer. The word traveled through Persian and Greek before entering English in the late 14th century.
