antigen
AN-ti-jin
/ˈæntɪdʒən/
A molecule or molecular structure on a pathogen that triggers an immune response in the body.
Refers to the surface signature or molecule that acts as a target marker for immune recognition.
The story behind the word. Coined around 1899 by French biologist László Detre from 'antisomatogen'—literally 'antibody generator'. It abbreviated the concept that these molecules generate anti-bodies when introduced into host tissues.
Word relationships
- immunogen: An immunogen always provokes an active immune response, whereas an antigen is any substance that can bind to an antibody, even if it fails to elicit a strong response on its own.
- antibody: An antibody is the host protein produced to neutralize the foreign antigen.
Commonly confused with
- pathogen: A pathogen is the entire disease-causing organism (like a virus or bacterium), while an antigen is a specific protein flag on that organism.
Word family
- antigenic (adjective): Relating to or acting as an antigen
- antigenicity (noun): The capacity to trigger an immune response
Collocations
- antigen presenting cell
- viral antigen
- surface antigen
- antigenic drift
Example sentences
- "Rapid antigen tests detect specific viral proteins on surface swabs within fifteen minutes." Diagnostic testing context
- "The viral antigen underwent a structural mutation, allowing the pathogen to evade host detection." Scientific journal reference
Memory hook
ANTIgen = ANTIbody GENerator. It is the molecular flag that generates antibodies. Antibody generator flag
When not to use
Do not confuse with 'antibody' (the responder protein) or 'allergen' (a harmless substance that inappropriately causes an allergy).
Fun facts
- Your ABO blood type is determined entirely by sugar molecules acting as antigens on the surface of your red blood cells.
- Mosquito saliva contains antigens that provoke the localized histamine flare-up we feel as an itchy bite.
