Items of collective or historical interest that were originally meant to be discarded after short-term use.
Refers to printed materials like ticket stubs, posters, pamphlets, and menus that were designed for a temporary purpose but survived.
The story behind the word. In ancient Greece, 'ephemeron' referred to a mayfly—an insect that lives for only a single day. In the 17th century, the word was used in medicine to describe a fever that lasted only twenty-four hours. Eventually, librarians and collectors adopted the term to describe printed materials designed to have a fleeting lifespan.
