A framework of light wooden or metal bars, chiefly used as a support for fruit trees or climbing plants.
A trellis is specifically designed as a lattice or grid structure. It is distinct from a simple stake or pole, as it allows plants to weave and climb horizontally as well as vertically.
The story behind the word. The Latin word 'trichila' meant an outdoor bower or summerhouse made of vines. In Old French, this became 'treille' (vine arbor), which eventually developed into 'trellis' in Middle English to describe the latticework structures used to support these climbing vines.
