The story behind the word. The word comes from Middle Dutch and Low German words for turf or a slice of earth with grass. Historically, in northern Europe and North American prairies where timber was scarce, settlers would cut thick blocks of this root-bound earth to build 'sod houses'—sturdy, insulated homes made literally of the earth.
