compromise
KOM-pruh-myze
/ˈkɒmprəmaɪz/
An agreement reached by each side making concessions, or to settle a dispute by mutual concession.
Implies mutual sacrifice; neither side gets exactly what they want, but both get enough to move forward.
The story behind the word. The word traces back to the Latin prefix com- (together) and promittere (to promise). Originally, it referred to a legal agreement where two disputing parties promised to accept the decision of an independent arbiter, binding themselves to a shared outcome.

Memory hook
Think of 'promise' with 'com' (together). You both promise to give up something to stay together. Co-promising to give up a little.
When not to use
Do not use when one side completely surrenders; that is a capitulation, not a compromise.
Fun facts
- In modern English, 'compromise' can also mean to weaken or expose to danger (e.g., 'a compromised immune system'), which evolved from the idea of putting a reputation at risk during arbitration.
