To expose the falseness, pretentiousness, or exaggerated claims of an idea, myth, or rumor.
Implies taking down a false belief or myth by demonstrating that it has no factual foundation.
The story behind the word. Coined in 1923 by American novelist William Woodward in his book 'Bunk'. He took the slang word 'bunk'—derived from Buncombe County, North Carolina, whose congressman gave a famously empty, endless speech in 1820—and added 'de-' to mean 'taking the nonsense out of something'.
