fader
FAY-dur
/ˈfeɪdər/
A sliding control on a mixing console or software interface used to adjust the volume level of an audio channel.
Unlike a round knob (potentiometer), a fader is a linear slider. This design allows engineers to see relative levels across multiple tracks at a glance and make smooth, precise multi-finger adjustments.
The story behind the word. Derived from the verb 'fade' (to wither or lose strength). In early radio and audio, a sliding resistor was used to make a signal 'fade away' into silence, leading to the device being named a 'fader.'
Word relationships
- slider: A general term for any linear control, whereas 'fader' is specific to audio levels.
- attenuator: The technical electronic term for a device that reduces signal level.
Commonly confused with
- knob: A knob (or 'pot') is rotary, while a fader is linear, allowing for much smoother manual control over volume fades.
Word family
- fade (verb): To gradually decrease or increase the volume of a signal.
Collocations
- channel fader
- master fader
- motorized fader
- fader throw
Idioms & expressions

Example sentences
- "The engineer rested his fingers lightly on the motorized faders, ready to ride the vocal levels during the live broadcast." A description of a physical mixing desk.
- "Before applying any plugins, pull down the master fader to ensure you have enough headroom and aren't clipping the main output." A guide to basic mixing techniques.
Memory hook
A 'fader' is the slider you use to make the music 'fade' out at the end of a song. Faders slide to make the sound fade.
When not to use
Do not use 'fader' to describe a simple rotary volume knob on a home stereo or guitar.
Fun facts
- High-end mixing consoles feature 'motorized faders' that physically move on their own, sliding up and down to match the automation programmed in the computer.
