protect
pruh-TEKT
/prəˈtɛkt/
To keep someone or something safe from harm, injury, damage, or loss.
A general, foundational action term that implies putting a shield or barrier between a vulnerable target and a source of danger.
The story behind the word. The ancient Romans constructed 'protegere' from 'pro-' (before or in front) and 'tegere' (to cover with a roof or tile). To protect something originally meant putting a literal cover over it to shield it from falling rain or incoming spears.
