To perceive or recognize something that is hidden, subtle, or unclear using intellect or senses.

The story behind the word. In Latin, 'cernere' meant to sift grain through a sieve to separate wheat from chaff. Adding 'dis-' made it 'to separate apart'. To discern is mentally to sift through noisy or misleading information to discover the pure truth hidden within.
