Relating to knowledge, its nature, grounds, scope, and validation.
Used when analyzing the justification and reliability of what we claim to know, rather than the physical reality of the objects themselves.
The story behind the word. Derived from ancient Greek 'episteme' (knowledge or science), which originates from 'epistasthai' (to know or be expert in), literally meaning 'to stand upon'. In classical Athens, 'episteme' stood in direct opposition to 'doxa' (mere opinion or belief). To have epistemic backing meant standing on firm, verifiable truth.
