In physics, "work" has a very specific definition: force times distance moved in the direction of the force. If you push a wall and it doesn't move, no physical work is done, even if you feel tired.

The story behind the word. The word "work" comes from the Old English "weorc" or "worc," which traces back to the Proto-Germanic "werkan." This ancient root referred to "action, deed, thing done," encompassing both physical labor and the result of an action. Its specific scientific meaning evolved much later.
