The body's sensory ability to perceive its own position, movement, and spatial orientation.

Refers to subconscious feedback from stretch receptors in muscles, tendons, and joints that tells you where your limbs are without looking.

The story behind the word. Coined in 1906 by Nobel laureate neuroscientist Charles Scott Sherrington. It combines Latin 'proprius' (one's own) and '-ception' (from 'capere', to receive/take). Literally, it is the sense of 'taking ownership of one's own body position'.

Word relationships

  • kinesthesis: 'Kinesthesis' focuses primarily on the perception of movement, whereas 'proprioception' includes static joint position and muscular tension.
  • body awareness: 'Body awareness' is an informal descriptive phrase, whereas 'proprioception' is the rigorous neurophysiological term.
  • proprioceptive deficit: The total or partial loss of body sense placement.

Commonly confused with

  • perception: 'Perception' is a general broad term for all sensory interpretation, whereas 'proprioception' is specifically internal physical position awareness.

Word family

  • proprioceptive (adjective): Relating to stimuli that are produced and perceived within an organism regarding spatial position.
  • proprioceptor (noun): A sensory receptor that receives stimuli from within the body.

Collocations

  • impaired proprioception
  • proprioception receptors
  • joint proprioception
  • enhance proprioception

Example sentences

  • "Closing your eyes and successfully touching your nose with your index finger relies on intact proprioception." Kinesiology
  • "Ankle sprains frequently disrupt joint nerve receptors, requiring dedicated proprioception training to prevent recurrent injury." Rehabilitation

Memory hook

PROPRIO (proper/own) + CEPTION (perception) = Perception of your OWN proper limb position. Your brain knowing your OWN body position.

When not to use

Do not confuse with general balance (vestibular sense) or spatial awareness derived from sight.

Fun facts

  • Without proprioception, you would collapse in a heap if you turned off the light, because you wouldn't know where your feet were without visual verification!
