The process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions.
Catharsis brings emotional purging and resolution, often leading to sudden psychological clarity or relief.
The story behind the word. Originating in ancient Greece from 'katharos' (pure, clean). Aristotle used it in his Poetics to describe how tragic theater cleanses audience emotions through pity and fear. Josef Breuer and Freud later applied it to medical psychotherapy.
