mentor
MEN-or
/ˈmen.tɔːr/
An experienced and trusted adviser who guides and supports a less experienced person.
Implies a long-term, holistic relationship focused on personal and professional growth, not just teaching a single skill.
The story behind the word. In Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey, King Odysseus leaves for the Trojan War and places his loyal friend, named Mentor, in charge of his young son, Telemachus. Mentor's job was to guide, protect, and educate the boy. Over time, the character's name became a common noun for any wise and trusted counselor.
