immanent

IM-uh-nent /ˈɪmənənt/
adjectiveC2GREUPSC
academicphilosophical

Existing, operating, or remaining within; inherently present throughout the material universe or human spirit.

In philosophy/theology, immanent describes divine presence dwelling within the world, in contrast to transcendent presence above it.

The story behind the word. Derived from Latin 'immanere', combining 'in-' (in/within) with 'manere' (to remain or dwell—the same root behind 'mansion' and 'permanent'). It literally means staying rooted inside something rather than departing.

  • inherent: Inherent refers to built-in essential characteristics, whereas immanent carries metaphysical presence indwelling within physical creation.

  • transcendent: Transcendent means existing above and outside physical creation.
  • external: External means located outside or on the exterior boundary.
