The custom of marrying only within the limits of a local community, clan, or tribe.
Endogamy is often enforced to preserve wealth, religious purity, or social status within a specific group.
The story behind the word. Coined in the 19th century by anthropologists from the Greek endon (within) and gamos (marriage). It was used to describe societies that actively discouraged or forbade their members from marrying outsiders.
