mitigation
mit-i-GAY-shun
/ˌmɪt.ɪˈɡeɪ.ʃən/
The action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or painfulness of something harmful or dangerous.
Mitigation reduces impact or severity; it does not necessarily eliminate the hazard completely.
The story behind the word. Derived from Latin 'mitigare', combining 'mitis' (soft or mild) and 'agere' (to make or drive). Originally used in ancient medical contexts for soothing harsh inflammation or softening painful symptoms, it transitioned into risk engineering to mean softening harsh impacts.
