mitigation
mit-ih-GAY-shuhn
/ˌmɪtɪˈɡeɪʃən/
The action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or painfulness of something.
In public health, mitigation strategies (like masks) aim to slow the spread rather than stop it entirely (suppression).
The story behind the word. Derived from 'mitis' (mild) and 'agere' (to do/make). It literally means 'to make mild'. It has been used in English since the 15th century to describe the softening of anger, pain, or harsh laws.
Word relationships
- alleviation: Alleviation often refers to physical pain or suffering, while mitigation is more common in technical and policy contexts.
- abatement: Abatement usually refers to reducing a nuisance (like noise or taxes).
- aggravation: The act of making a problem or injury worse.
- exacerbation: The process of making a problem or disease more intense.
Commonly confused with
- suppression: Mitigation slows the spread; suppression tries to bring cases down to zero.

- mitigate (verb): To make less severe.
- mitigating (adjective): Making something less severe (e.g., 'mitigating circumstances').
Collocations

When not to use
Do not use when you mean 'elimination' or 'cure'. Mitigation is about making a bad situation better, not perfect.
Fun facts
