stevedore
STEE-vuh-dor
/ˈstiː.və.dɔːr/
A firm or worker employed at a port to load and unload cargo from ships.
Refers to the specialized port labor force or company that operates heavy machinery to transfer cargo between ship and shore.
The story behind the word. Borrowed from Spanish 'estibador', coming from the verb 'estibar' (to pack or compress cargo tightly into a hold). Spanish dockworkers were famous for efficiently packing wool and goods into galleons, and the term spread throughout world maritime trading routes.
