Mercy, leniency, or mildness, especially shown by a judge, ruler, or authority figure.
Clemency is an official act of mercy that reduces a punishment. It is granted by someone in power to someone who is guilty.
The story behind the word. Clemency comes from the Latin 'clementia', meaning 'mildness' or 'gentleness'. Originally, it was used to describe mild, pleasant weather. The Romans personified this as Clementia, the goddess of mercy and forgiveness, who was famously celebrated by Julius Caesar.
