The offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of something of value to influence the action of an official or other person in charge of a public or legal duty.

Bribery can involve both the person giving the gift and the person receiving it; both are legally liable.

The story behind the word. The word originally meant a 'morsel of bread' given to a beggar. Over time, it shifted from a gift of charity to a gift given to influence someone in power—a 'morsel' to keep them quiet or helpful.
