The scientific study of old age, aging processes, and the particular problems of older adults.

Gerontology is a multidisciplinary field covering biological, psychological, and social aspects of aging, distinct from medical treatment.

The story behind the word. Coined in 1903 by the Russian-born biologist Élie Metchnikoff—who won the Nobel Prize in 1908—gerontology was created by joining Greek geron ('old man') with -logia ('study'). Metchnikoff believed that studying aging scientifically could help humanity conquer the suffering often associated with old age.
