geriatric
jair-ee-AT-rik
/ˌdʒɛr.iˈæt.rɪk/
Relating to old age or the health care of elderly people; (as a noun) an elderly person receiving medical care.
Pertains specifically to medical diagnosis, treatment, and clinical care tailored to elderly patients.
The story behind the word. The term was coined in 1909 by Dr. Ignatz Leo Nascher, an Austrian-born physician working in New York. Disgusted by the prevailing medical attitude that old age was incurable and unworthy of treatment, Nascher combined Greek geron ('old man') and iatrikos ('healing') to create a distinct medical specialty focused on elder care.
