Disclaimer
diss-KLAY-mer
/dɪsˈkleɪ.mər/
A formal statement denying responsibility or affiliation, or limiting legal liability.
Usually appears in email footers to protect companies from legal claims, accidental leaks, or binding unintended contracts.
The story behind the word. In feudal property law, if someone claimed you owed them land, you could make a formal disclaimer—literally 'shouting back' that you claimed no right or involvement in the property. Modern legal teams appended this 'shouting away' to the bottom of digital emails.
