Protocol
PROH-tuh-kol
/ˈprəʊ.tə.kɒl/
The official system of rules, correct behavior, or established procedures governing an organization or system.
In digital communication, protocol refers both to human etiquette (e.g., CC rules) and technical networking rules (e.g., SMTP, IMAP).
The story behind the word. In ancient Greece, a prōtokollon was the very first sheet glued (kolla) onto a papyrus scroll. It contained the date, owner, and official summary. That cover note evolved into official legal documentation rules, and eventually digital protocol.
