A standard, baseline, or reference point against which other things can be measured or evaluated.
Serves as a fixed reference scale to measure relative progress, growth, or quality.
The story behind the word. Originally, land surveyors carved physical horizontal marks into stone walls or workbenches to insert an iron angle (a 'bench') that kept measuring rods level. The term expanded to mean any reference standard for measuring quality.
