An established guide or set of explicit criteria used to score and evaluate student work or performance.

The story behind the word. In medieval manuscripts, scribes wrote headings, instructions, and liturgical directions using red ink made from red chalk ('rubrica'). These red-letter guidelines became known as 'rubrics', eventually coming to signify formal rules or grading criteria.
