powertrain
POW-er-trane
/ˈpaʊərtreɪn/
The entire system of components that generate power and deliver it to the road surface, including the engine, transmission, and drivetrain.
It is the most inclusive term for a vehicle's propulsion system.
The story behind the word. Similar to 'drivetrain,' it combines the concept of 'power' with the mechanical 'train' or sequence of parts. It became a standard industry term in the mid-20th century to describe the complete mechanical heart of a car.
Word relationships
- propulsion system: Propulsion system is used more in aerospace; powertrain is the standard automotive term.
Commonly confused with
- drivetrain: Drivetrain = Transmission + Axles; Powertrain = Engine + Transmission + Axles.

Memory hook
The 'powertrain' is the 'train' that carries the 'power' from the fuel to the road. Powertrain = The whole power path.
When not to use
Don't use it if you are only talking about the axles and wheels (that's the drivetrain).
Fun facts

- Engineers often specialize specifically in 'powertrain integration' to make sure the engine and transmission talk to each other perfectly.
