technicalprofessional

The entire system of components that generate power and deliver it to the road surface, including the engine, transmission, and drivetrain.

It is the most inclusive term for a vehicle's propulsion system.

The story behind the word. Similar to 'drivetrain,' it combines the concept of 'power' with the mechanical 'train' or sequence of parts. It became a standard industry term in the mid-20th century to describe the complete mechanical heart of a car.

Word relationships

  • propulsion system: Propulsion system is used more in aerospace; powertrain is the standard automotive term.

Commonly confused with

  • drivetrain: Drivetrain = Transmission + Axles; Powertrain = Engine + Transmission + Axles.

Collocations

  • powertrain warranty
  • hybrid powertrain
  • electric powertrain

Example sentences

  • "The powertrain warranty is usually longer than the bumper-to-bumper warranty because those components are built to last." Warranty information.
  • "The shift from internal combustion to electric powertrains is the biggest change in the industry in a century." Future of transport.

Memory hook

The 'powertrain' is the 'train' that carries the 'power' from the fuel to the road. Powertrain = The whole power path.

When not to use

Don't use it if you are only talking about the axles and wheels (that's the drivetrain).

Fun facts

  • In an electric car, the powertrain is much simpler, often consisting of just a battery, a motor, and a single-speed transmission.
  • Engineers often specialize specifically in 'powertrain integration' to make sure the engine and transmission talk to each other perfectly.
