The study of the properties of moving air and the interaction between the air and solid bodies moving through it.

In automotive design, it focuses on reducing 'drag' (resistance) and increasing 'downforce' (stability).

The story behind the word. Combining the Greek 'aer' (air) and 'dynamis' (power/force), the term was first used in the mid-19th century to describe the physics of flight. It wasn't until the 1920s and 30s that car designers began to realize that air was a 'fluid' they had to push through.
