damping
An influence within or upon an oscillatory system that has the effect of reducing, restricting, or preventing its oscillations.
Damping is the deliberate draining of energy from an oscillating system (like a vibrating spring or a swinging pendulum). It smooths out motion and prevents violent, uncontrolled bouncing. It is not the same as 'dampening' (making something wet), though they share a root.
Word relationships
- attenuation: Attenuation is the general reduction of force, value, or signal strength, while damping specifically refers to the reduction of physical oscillations or vibrations.
- resonance: Resonance is the amplification of oscillations when a system is stimulated at its natural frequency, the exact opposite of damping.
Commonly confused with
- dampening: Dampening can mean making something wet or metaphorically depressing a mood, whereas damping is strictly the technical term for suppressing physical vibrations.
Word family
- damp (verb): To restrict or suppress vibrations.
- damper (noun): A device that damps oscillations (like a shock absorber).
Collocations
- viscous damping
- damping coefficient
- vibration damping
- critical damping
Example sentences
- "Without adequate shock damping, the car would continue to bounce down the road long after hitting a single pothole." An engineering analysis of a suspension system
- "The Taipei 101 skyscraper uses a massive tuned mass damper to provide structural damping against high winds and earthquakes." A structural engineering report on skyscrapers
Memory hook
Think of a 'damper' on a fireplace chimney that 'chokes' the airflow. Mechanical 'damping' 'chokes' the vibrations of a spring. Damping chokes the bounce.
When not to use
Do not use 'damping' to mean making something slightly wet; that is 'dampening'. In engineering, always use 'damping' to refer to vibration control.
Fun facts
- The Taipei 101 skyscraper has a 660-metric-ton steel pendulum suspended inside its top floors; this 'tuned mass damper' sways to counteract the building's movement during typhoons.
- High-end acoustic guitars use internal wooden braces designed to provide specific damping, shaping the instrument's unique tone and sustain.
