To reuse discarded objects or material in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original.

Unlike standard recycling (which often degrades material quality into 'downcycling'), upcycling adds value and extends aesthetic or functional utility.

The story behind the word. The term was coined in 1994 by mechanical engineer Reiner Pilz in an interview with Thornton Kay for the architecture publication Salvo. Pilz argued that traditional recycling was actually 'downcycling' because it destroyed value, advocating instead for 'upcycling' where old products are given greater, not lesser, value.

Word relationships

  • repurpose: Repurpose means finding a new use for an item, but does not necessarily imply an increase in artistic or financial value.
  • refurbish: Refurbish means restoring an item to its original state, whereas upcycling transforms it into something new and superior.
  • downcycle: Downcycling converts materials into lower-grade applications with reduced economic value.

Commonly confused with

  • recycle: Recycling generally involves breaking down items into raw materials; upcycling preserves or enhances structural integrity for a higher-value purpose.

Word family

  • upcycling (noun): The process or practice of creating higher value products from waste.
  • upcycled (adjective): Having been converted into a product of greater value.

Collocations

  • upcycle waste
  • upcycle materials
  • upcycle discarded goods

Example sentences

Memory hook

Think of lifting an item 'UP' the value ladder within a 'CYCLE' of reuse. Elevate value on the reuse wheel.

When not to use

Do not use for simple waste sorting or standard chemical recycling where materials are broken down into base raw components.

Fun facts

  • The world's largest upcycled structure is the EcoARK in Taipei, constructed from 1.5 million recycled plastic bottles.
