upcycle

UHP-sahy-kuhl /ˈʌpˌsaɪkəl/
verbB2
environmentaldesigngeneral

To reuse discarded objects or materials in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original.

Upcycling is distinct from recycling because it does not break the material down to its raw form; instead, it creatively repurposes the existing object into something more valuable.

The story behind the word. The term was coined in 1994 by German engineer Reiner Pilz in an interview about waste management. He criticized traditional recycling as 'downcycling' because it degraded the value of materials, arguing that we need 'upcycling' where old products are given more value, not less.

Word relationships

  • repurpose: Repurpose means to find a new use for something, while upcycle specifically emphasizes increasing the item's aesthetic or monetary value.
  • downcycle: Downcycling involves converting waste materials into new materials of lesser quality (such as turning writing paper into cardboard).

Commonly confused with

  • recycle: Recycling breaks down waste materials (like melting glass or shredding paper) to make new raw materials, whereas upcycling keeps the original object intact but elevates its design.

Word family

  • upcycling (noun): The process of creatively repurposing waste materials.

When not to use
