The story behind the word. Derived from 'Milaner', meaning an inhabitant or merchant of Milan, Italy. During the Renaissance, Milan was Europe's premier supplier of luxury fine goods, including silk ribbons, straw, feathers, and elaborate headgear. Merchants who imported these fashion goods were called milliners, and their trade became millinery.
