pilling

PIL-ing /ˈpɪl.ɪŋ/
nounC1TOEFL
technicalspecialized

The formation of tiny, stubborn balls of tangled fibers on the surface of knit or woven fabrics.

Pilling occurs when loose fiber ends rub together from mechanical friction and roll into tight little knots pinned to the cloth surface.

The story behind the word. Traced to Latin 'pilus' (hair). In textile terminology, when short staple fibers detach partially from yarns, surface friction rolls them into hairball-like clusters called 'pills'. The noun 'pilling' defines this structural wearing defect.

Word relationships

  • fuzzing: Fuzzing is the initial stage where fibers work loose, whereas pilling is the advanced stage where fuzzy fibers form distinct knots.
  • bobbling: Bobbling is the informal British English term for the technical textile word pilling.
  • smoothness: Smoothness denotes a completely flat fabric face free of fiber entanglements.

Commonly confused with
