The quality of being able to be exchanged for something else, especially currency or securities.

Refers to the ease with which a currency can be exchanged for another currency or for gold, without restrictions.

The story behind the word. The word 'convertibility' comes from the Latin 'con-' (meaning 'together' or 'with') and 'vertere' (meaning 'to turn'). So, to 'convert' is literally 'to turn together' or 'to turn into' something else. In finance, it's the ability of one currency to 'turn into' another, freely and without restriction.
