barrier
BAR-ee-er
/ˈbæriər/
A material or structure that blocks the passage of substances, such as gases, moisture, light, or microorganisms.
In packaging, 'barrier properties' refer to how effectively a material prevents external elements from reaching the food and internal elements (like aromas) from escaping.
The story behind the word. The word originally referred to a physical wooden palisade or gate defending a castle or city. Over time, it generalized to any obstacle, and in the 20th century, materials scientists adopted it to describe microscopic layers that defend food against invisible invaders like oxygen molecules.
Word relationships
- shield: A shield implies active protection against an attack or force, while a barrier is a passive, structural block.
- blockade: A blockade is an active, often military, obstruction of passage, whereas a barrier is a physical material property.
- conductor: A conductor allows substances or energy to pass through easily, whereas a barrier blocks them.
- opening: An opening is a physical gap that permits free passage.
Commonly confused with
- filter: A filter selectively allows some substances to pass while blocking others, whereas a barrier is designed to block everything it is targeted against.
Word family
- barrier-coated (adjective): Coated with a material that provides barrier properties.
Collocations
- moisture barrier
- oxygen barrier

- protective barrier
Example sentences
- "The foil layer acts as an absolute barrier to light and moisture, extending the product's shelf life significantly." Materials science quarterly
Memory hook
Think of a 'Bear' standing at the door acting as a 'Barrier' to keep unwanted visitors out. A barrier stands in the way, keeping spoilage far away.
When not to use
Do not use only for physical obstacles (like road barriers); in food science, it refers to molecular-level shields.
Fun facts
- Glass is the ultimate barrier material; it has a gas transmission rate of zero, meaning absolutely no oxygen or moisture can pass through it.
