A piece of equipment or furniture that is securely put in place in a house.
In plumbing, it refers specifically to permanent items connected to the water system, like sinks, toilets, and tubs.
The story behind the word. The word developed from the Latin 'fixus', meaning firmly attached. In the 16th century, English law began using 'fixture' to describe items that were so securely attached to a building that they legally became part of the land and could not be taken by a tenant.
