furnace
FUR-nis
/ˈfɜːrnɪs/
An enclosed structure in which material can be heated to very high temperatures, especially for heating a building or melting metal.
In residential terms, it is the central heating unit (often in a basement) that burns fuel or uses electricity to heat air or water.
The story behind the word. The word furnace comes from the Latin 'fornax', meaning an oven or kiln. This is closely related to 'formus', the Latin word for warm. It has been used for centuries to describe any enclosed space where intense heat is generated.

- kiln: A kiln is a specialized furnace used for baking pottery or drying wood, not for heating buildings.
