In climate contexts, it refers to the baseline temperature or humidity of the surrounding room or environment, rather than a direct heat source.

The story behind the word. Ambient comes from the Latin 'ambire', which literally means 'to go around'. It is the same root that gives us 'ambition' (originally meaning going around to solicit votes) and 'ambidextrous'. In physics and climate, it describes the air that 'goes all around' us.
